Why Zero to Three?

"Your brain never stops developing... but the most rapid period is in the first few years... it builds the foundation. That's why it's so important. Everything that follows has to build on that foundation." - Jack P. Shonkoff, M.D., Director of the Harvard Center on the Developing Child.

In the Bernard Van Leer Foundation's docu-series The Beginning of Life, Shonkoff highlights the importance of these foundational years in a child's development, and explains that strong foundations for learning are created through experiences. When children play, read, talk, sing with caring adults in early literacy rich spaces, like their local library, children learn and develop in ways that will benefit them throughout their lives.
